Medication errors sometimes fault of packaging design

Medication errors are a serious problem that can affect Connecticut hospital patients as well as after they have been discharged. The Institute of Medicine published a report in 1999 that found that around 7,000 people die from medication errors each year, but some observers believe that the total is higher. These types of errors can occur when a patient is given the wrong type of medication or the wrong dosage.

How to avoid some common hospital hazards

Although most people expect to get healthier when they visit a hospital in Connecticut, many patients are injured by medical mistakes and sickened by hospital infections. Every year, upwards of 400,000 people in the United States die as a direct result of hospital-related medical errors. Fatal hospital mistakes are so common in this country that they are actually the third-leading cause of death.

Liquid biopsies may detect cancers other tests miss

Though doctors in Connecticut may recommend an annual screening test for prostate cancer, the results of the PSA are not always accurate. Men who test negative for prostate cancer after having a PSA test may actually have a cancer that the test didn't recognize. Tests called liquid biopsies could diagnose cancer missed by a PSA by detecting cancerous cells in a patient's blood.

Why it's not easy to find out about your doctor's past

Connecticut residents put their trust in medical professionals for their health care needs, but doctors do sometimes make mistakes. Doctors are often disciplined by state medical boards for errors and ethics violations, but according to Consumer Reports, people who want to know about their own doctor's disciplinary record could have difficulty obtaining the information.
