Colon cancer and hemorrhoids

Connecticut residents who may have colon or rectal cancer may wrongly believe that they only have a bad case of hemorrhoids. This is because they have many of the same symptoms including a change in bowel movements and pain or discomfort in the rectal area. However, hemorrhoids are easy to treat with creams or other remedies that can be applied at home, and discomfort should start to recede within days.

If pain or discomfort doesn't go away relatively quickly with treatment, it could be a sign of cancer. Unfortunately, it may be difficult for doctors to diagnose colon cancer with any confidence until symptoms escalate. For instance, bloody stool is a symptom of hemorrhoids, but it is one of the signs that cancer may be present. Sudden weight loss may also be an indication of cancer.

People who experience these symptoms are urged to talk to their doctors as soon as possible. The good news is that relatively few people will fall ill with colon or rectal cancer, as it only afflicts one out of every 20 people. However, it is one of the leading causes of death in America each year, and many may unwittingly make their condition worse by attempting to seek a diagnosis through online sources.

A cancer misdiagnosis can lead to serious injury or death to a patient. A person who has been harmed as a result of a failure to diagnose cancer may want to speak with a medical malpractice attorney to determine the recourse that may be available. In some cases, a review by the attorney of the patient's medical records as well as other evidence may result in a determination that a lawsuit predicated on a failure to exhibit the requisite standard of care should be filed against the responsible party or parties.
