Alert fatigue and Connecticut medication errors

As all aspects of patient charting, including medication tracking, become more automated, the incidence of potential drug interaction alerts is skyrocketing. This in turn has given rise to a condition known as "alert fatigue," in which health care providers see and hear these alerts so frequently they cease to have meaning. As they become more desensitized to this kind of alert, they place Connecticut patients at risk of harmful or possibly fatal prescription drug interactions.

Medical researchers study "never events"

Some medical errors that occur in Connecticut hospitals are referred to as 'never events." These medical mistakes happen when an object is left inside of a patient, the wrong implant is placed inside of a patient, the wrong procedure is performed on a patient or a procedure is performed on the wrong side of a patient's body. Although events like these should never happen, it is estimated that they occur in about one out of every 12,000 medical procedures in the United States.

More than 60 patients join malpractice case against dentist

Connecticut residents may be surprised to hear about a dentist who is being investigated on claims that he abused his patients and performed dental extractions on children without anesthesia. The dentist, who is based in Florida, was the only dentist in the Jacksonville area who both did pediatric dentistry and accepted Medicaid. There are now more than 60 former patients involved in the lawsuit.
