Woman wins medical malpractice suit in cosmetic surgery error

Sometimes, Connecticut residents may make the decision to have cosmetic surgery. If it is a common procedure, they probably do not worry about any potential complications but as with any surgery, the possibility for error does exist. A woman out of state had her life changed forever when problems arose from a surgery she thought would improve her appearance. She was recently awarded a settlement in a medical malpractice suit that will hopefully help with her quality of life.

The problem happened when the woman decided to undergo a procedure commonly referred to as a "tummy tuck." After her surgery, she had several medical issues, all of which she reported to her doctor. Her doctor treated the wounds with pain medicine but would not give her a referral to another physician that specialized in wound treatment, despite her asking him for one. She finally went to an emergency room two months after her initial procedure, where doctors informed her she had a staph infection. She says she still suffers from residual effects of her condition.

When her case was brought to the court, jurors decided that the woman was not at fault in any way for her experience. They found her doctor liable for all of her injuries and medical problems. She was awarded damages based on the pain and suffering she endured and jurors also considered her lost income, both past and future. The doctor is planning to appeal the decision.

If anyone here in Connecticut finds themselves in a similar position to this woman, filing a civil claim may be the best way to recoup any financial losses. A medical malpractice suit that is successful could be used to pay bills and other expenses that result from a doctor's error. Patients place their trust in medical professionals, but when that trust is breached, a civil suit could help with recovery.
