Statistics released regarding adverse surgical events at Connecticut hospitals

It is very important for medical professionals and medical facilities to act properly when providing surgical care to patients. When medical professionals and medical facilities act negligently when providing surgical care, it can result in surgical errors occurring. Surgical errors can be a very serious type of medical error. Such errors can cause a great deal of harm.

Recently, a report was issued which contained statistics regarding adverse surgical events at hospitals in Connecticut. The report was issued by Connecticut's Department of Public Health. The report regarded adverse events at hospitals in Connecticut in 2011 that were self-reported by hospitals.

According to the report, the number of serious disability-causing/death-causing adverse surgical events reported by Connecticut hospitals went up in 2011. In 2011, 21 such events were reported. In 2010, only 16 such events were reported.

The report also indicated that the number of reported incidents of one particular type of surgical error went up a fair amount between 2010 and 2011. The type of surgical error in question are wrong-site surgeries. Reportedly, in 2011, Connecticut hospitals reported 13 such errors. In 2010, only eight such errors were reported.

These statistics give rise to some interesting and important questions. What is behind the two above-mentioned increases? Is the occurrence of wrong-site surgeries and serious disability/death-causing adverse surgical events increasing in Connecticut? Are hospitals becoming more likely to report surgical errors? Do hospitals in Connecticut need to put greater efforts towards preventing surgical errors? It will be interesting to see what the answers to these questions are ultimately determined to be.
