Rare form of mesothelioma often misdiagnosed

Testicular mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is often misdiagnosed in Connecticut and across the U.S. While there is no cure for testicular mesothelioma, surgery can be used to increase the life span of patients with the condition.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. When a person is exposed to asbestos fibers in an environment such as a construction site, the fibers can enter the mesothelial cells in the person's body. Most people are affected by mesothelioma in their lungs, but mesothelioma can also affect the heart, abdomen and testicles.

Testicular mesothelioma is less prevalent than any other kind of mesothelioma, so very little is known about the disease. Researchers do know that symptoms of testicular mesothelioma include swelling and fluid buildup in the scrotum and pain and lumps in the testicles. Patients who present these kinds of symptoms are often treated for pain, and they are commonly misdiagnosed with a hernia. A correct diagnosis of testicular mesothelioma is usually only achieved during surgery.

When a patient has a life-threatening condition like cancer, an early diagnosis may improve the patient's outcome. If a doctor misdiagnosed a cancer patient, the patient may be able to sue the doctor for allowing the cancer to progress untreated. A misdiagnosed patient may also pursue compensation for injuries that they suffered because of the unnecessary treatments they received. An attorney may be able to represent a patient who was injured by a misdiagnosis or a delayed diagnosis in a medical malpractice claim.
