Study shows nurse practitioners help reduce medical errors

Connecticut nursing home residents sometimes have to go to the hospital. When they are discharged and return to the nursing home, it is common for medical mistakes to be made. A study shows that having a nurse practitioner visit with such patients within the first 48 hours that they are back in the nursing home may reduce medical errors.

Educating Connecticut residents about childhood cancer

On average, 43 children each day are diagnosed with cancer, which is a disease involving abnormal cell growth. It impacts children of all ages, races and economic backgrounds, which is why September 2016 was labeled Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The goal is to educate people about the causes and impact of cancer on both those who are diagnosed as well as those tasked with caring for them.

A misdiagnosis can result in improper medical care

An aging population presents many different challenges to Connecticut health care providers. Having enough doctors and nurses and enough hospital beds are common issues. Another challenge involves diagnosing dementia related diseases correctly.

The misidentification of health care patients

Connecticut residents may be shocked to learn how often patients are misidentified in hospitals and clinics. The Pennsylvania-based ECRI Institute studied patient misidentification by scrutinizing more than 7,600 wrong-patient events that had been reported voluntarily between early 2013 and mid 2015 by 181 health care organizations, and they came to the conclusion that the problem is widespread and goes largely unreported.
