Surgeon confesses to lying under oath in malpractice case

A culture of silence that protects colleagues hampers the collection of evidence in medical malpractice cases. Health care workers in Connecticut might recognize the reasons that led a retired surgeon to publicly admit his lie during a court case earlier in his career.

Potential causes of cerebral palsy

Connecticut children who suffer brain damage before or during birth are at risk for developing cerebral palsy. This disorder, which is caused by an abnormal development of the brain, can affect the ability to control muscles. There are several risk factors that increase the chance that a child may be affected by cerebral palsy.

Misdiagnoses and physician assumptions

Connecticut doctors may be making misdiagnoses based on unconscious assumptions about their patients. A study that appeared in Perspectives on Medical Education found that only after participants were specifically asked to examine their biases did the rate of misdiagnoses go down. Furthermore, the process had to be an experiential one. Simply discussing the problem did not appear to lower misdiagnoses.

Better communication could reduce misdiagnosis

When people in Connecticut enter hospitals as patients, they face a chance of getting the wrong diagnosis. One study estimated a rate of misdiagnosis at 1 in 20 hospital patients. This translates into about 12 million people per year who could be missing out on proper treatment.

Misdiagnosis common among asthma sufferers

Many Connecticut residents live with asthma. Nationwide, over 25 million people have the condition that inflames and constricts their lung airways. About 7 million of them are children. A survey of asthma patients conducted by Health Union revealed that close to one in three respondents reported that they had been initially misdiagnosed or endured a prolonged series of tests before receiving an accurate diagnosis of asthma.
