Commonly misdiagnosed conditions

Some individuals in Connecticut may have experienced one or more of the most common misdiagnoses that doctors make. Lung, breast and colorectal cancer are frequently misdiagnosed, and this often happens because doctors do not follow up with a biopsy after a test is abnormal. Heart attacks are also misdiagnosed often because symptoms may not be among the most common or the patient may belong to a demographic in which a heart attack is unexpected.

Hospital falls and medical malpractice liability

When Connecticut residents are injured in an accident because of the negligence of someone else, they may be able to seek compensation for costs relating to the accident. Personal injury lawsuits might involve motor vehicle crashes, dog bites or slip and fall accidents. However, there are some questions about whether slip and fall incidents taking place in a hospital fall under the category of medical malpractice or not.

Concerns over numbers of medication errors during surgeries

Connecticut residents might be very surprised to learn that a recent study revealed a significant rate of medication errors during surgeries at a hospital known for excellent patient safety practices. The details for nearly 300 surgeries at a Massachusetts hospital were evaluated, and nearly half of the procedures involved a minimum of one medication error. At least 80 percent of the incidents were considered preventable, and more than 30 percent of the errors resulted in negative drug events.

Colon cancer and hemorrhoids

Connecticut residents who may have colon or rectal cancer may wrongly believe that they only have a bad case of hemorrhoids. This is because they have many of the same symptoms including a change in bowel movements and pain or discomfort in the rectal area. However, hemorrhoids are easy to treat with creams or other remedies that can be applied at home, and discomfort should start to recede within days.
