Misdiagnosis leads to four years of improper treatment

Most people do not have the extensive medical knowledge that doctors, nurses and other medical professionals do. Connecticut citizens typically trust that their physicians will properly asses their symptoms and provide a diagnosis and treatment. Unfortunately, mistakes can happen, as in the case of one out-of-state man who was treated for a condition he never had because of a doctor's misdiagnosis.

Several years ago, the man in this story began falling for no apparent reason. His physician diagnosed him with an unusual and ultimately fatal neuromuscular condition. He went through a great number of treatments, including having his thymus gland removed, which involved opening his chest. The misdiagnosis was not discovered until the man's physician went to work somewhere else and the man's new doctor properly diagnosed him.

The incorrect diagnosis caused the man to have other significant health issues -- he was instructed to take medication that caused him to gain a significant amount of weight and he ended up with hypertension. He decided to file a lawsuit against the doctor, believing that the four years of improper treatments only made his condition worse. The doctor was found to be liable, and the man was awarded a significant sum of money in damages.

Even though this case did not happen here in Connecticut, families can learn from this man's ordeal. If someone has suffered due to a misdiagnosis by a medical professional, he or she might decide to pursue a civil claim in order to compensate for the financial losses -- extensive medical bills, lost wages or lost potential for future earnings -- that can come from these types of events. No one should ever have to go through what this man did, but when something like this happens, there are ways to see that those responsible are held accountable.
