Hospital and deceased man's family reach settlement in malpractice case

Diagnosis-related negligence can be very harmful to patients. Sadly, such negligence can sometimes even result in a patient's death. Thus, it is very important for medical professionals and medical facilities to act properly when it comes to the examining, testing and diagnosing of patients.

Recently, a case that involved allegations of diagnosis-related negligence was settled. The case was from Arizona. The case involved a man who went to the emergency room of a hospital in Arizona on Feb. 14, 2007, complaining of a persistent cough.

The man's family alleged that negligence occurred during the course of the man's care at the emergency room. Specifically, the man's family claimed that the man was not given a test (a chest x-ray) that he should have been given and that the man was misdiagnosed with acute bronchitis when he actually had pneumonia. Reportedly, two days after the man visited the emergency room, he died of his pneumonia.

A wrongful death lawsuit was brought by the man's family against the hospital in connection to these allegations of medical negligence. Recently, the man's family and the hospital reached a settlement in regards to this lawsuit. It has been reported that, as part of this settlement, a monetary payment will be made by the hospital to the man's family.

As the allegations that were made in this recently settled case underscore, diagnosis-related negligence can cause a great deal of harm. No patient should have to suffer harm or lose his or her life because a medical professional or medical facility acted negligently in regards to the examining, testing or diagnosing of him or her. Thus, one hopes that medical professionals and medical facilities are held accountable when they engage in negligence like that which was alleged in this case.
