Client's Bill of Rights

  1. A lawyer shall provide competent representation to a client. Competent representation requires the legal knowledge, skill, thoroughness and preparation reasonably necessary for the case.
     
  2. A lawyer shall abide by a client's decision concerning the objectives of the case. A lawyer shall abide by a client's decision to accept an offer of settlement.
     
  3. A lawyer shall act with reasonable diligence and promptness in representing a client.
     
  4. A lawyer shall keep a client reasonably informed about the status of a case and shall promptly comply with reasonable requests for information.
     
  5. A lawyer shall explain a matter to a client to the extent necessary to allow a client to make an informed decision on a case.
     
  6. A lawyer' s fee shall be reasonable. The fee agreement shall be in writing and shall set forth the basis for the fee.
     
  7. A lawyer shall maintain the confidentiality of information communicated to him by the client unless disclosure is consented to by the client, required by law or ethics, or unless necessary to accomplish the goal of the representation.
     
  8. A lawyer shall not represent a client if a conflict of interest exists. A lawyer owes undivided loyalty to a client.
     
  9. A lawyer shall safeguard the property of a client.
     
  10. In representing a client, a lawyer shall exercise professional judgment and render candid advice. In rendering advice, the lawyer may consider the law as well as the effect of the advice on the client's moral, social and economic situation.
     
  11. A lawyer shall not institute or defend a case unless there is a good faith basis to do so.
     
  12. A lawyer shall make reasonable efforts to expedite litigation consistent with the interests of his client.
     
  13. A lawyer shall not knowingly make a false statement to a client, judge, opposing counsel or a third person.
     
  14. A lawyer shall make reasonable efforts to ensure that his law firm staff conforms to these Bills of Rights.
